How to Bin Single-Use Plastics Responsibly

Whenever you think of disposing of single-use plastics, the first thing that comes to mind is recycling. Now recycling is very good, but you still need to consider that it can take up to 1000 years for plastic to decompose. Even if it’s being recycled, it’ll still be discarded some time.

There’s no denying that we’ve made progress in recycling plastic, but it’s also important to know that we weren’t using as much plastic before as we are now. Plus, there are many different types of single-use plastics and some of them cannot be recycled. So, knowing how to dispose of them and finding environment-friendly alternatives is essential.

Disposing of Plastic Bottles

Different types of plastics have different properties. That’s why some of them do get recycled while others do not. Plastic bottles are one of the easiest items to be recycled and that’s why local authorities encourage you to separate them from your trash. If you haven’t been separating them, then you should start doing that.

Disposing of Plastic Straws

Plastic straws are one of the worst plastic products because they’re being extensively produced without being recycled. Since they are not being recycled, there isn’t an easy way to dispose of them. Even if you start separating them from your general trash, they will still end up in landfills.

However, it’s your responsibility to not leave them lying around if you have to use them. So, try to dispose them of in dustbins or your own home trash after you’re done using them. We recommend that you avoid using single-use straws and if you have to use them, then use biodegradable straws that aren’t harmful to the environment.

Disposing of Plastic Bags

Just like straws, it’s hard to dispose of plastic bags as not a lot of local authorities offer to recycle them. Again, it’s better if you avoid using them and try using organic cotton bags, which are reusable and easy to carry.

Even if you have to use plastic bags, drop them off at stores that have plastic bag recycling bin.

Use Environmentally-Friendly Alternatives

The best way for you to reduce your carbon footprint is to avoid using single-use plastics. Instead of plastic straws, use bamboo or paper straws and buy reusable shopping bags instead of plastic bags.
